Character Creation for RPG Newbies

Some family members that have never played dungeons and dragons wanted to try and so I came up with this character creation process to help them think through their characters.

Character Creation

Archetype

In 3-5 words describe the type of character you'd be interested in playing
Examples:

  • Foul mouthed drunken sailor
  • Golden hearted prison warden
  • Honorable thief
  • Promise bound healer
  • Wizard school drop out
Adventurer

In 1-2 sentences, what motivates your character to adventure?
Examples:

  • They needed to make money to pay off a debt that their current employment wouldn't be able to met
  • They crossed the wrong people and are now adventuring hoping they'll be hard to find
  • They have been commissioned by the institution they're a part of to conduct a field study in their area of expertise
  • They are adventuring to escape a boring life they left behind
Inner Connections

In one sentence, how are you connected to someone in the group?
Examples:
-We're siblings
-We're from the same town
-We're from the same schoole

Outer Connections

In one sentence, how are you connected to someone or something outside the group?
Examples:

  • I'm part of a guild
  • I know the person who is asking for help
  • I owe money to a powerful group
